Korean Lash Lift vs Traditional Lash Lift: What’s the Difference?

If you've been looking for a lash lift in London, you may have noticed a new treatment appearing everywhere: the Korean lash lift. But what actually makes it different from a traditional lash lift? Is it gentler? Does it give a different result? And most importantly — which one is better for your lashes?
The short answer is: neither technique is automatically “better” for everyone. The right choice depends on your natural lashes, their condition, how they grow and the result you want. Here's what you need to know.
What is a traditional lash lift?
A traditional lash lift reshapes your own natural lashes to create a lifted and curled appearance. The lashes are positioned onto a silicone shield and treated with professional lifting and setting solutions.
Many traditional systems use thioglycolate-based reducing agents, often referred to as TGA systems. These temporarily change bonds within the hair so the lashes can be reshaped and set into their new position. The result can range from a soft lift to a much more noticeable curl depending on the lashes, shield and technique used.
Traditional lash lifts can give beautiful results when the correct products, timing and technique are chosen.
What is a Korean lash lift?
A Korean lash lift takes a slightly different approach to lifting and shaping the natural lashes. The technique typically focuses more on lifting from the root, controlling lash direction and creating a smooth transition through the length of the lash.
Many Korean-style systems use cysteamine-based formulas, which generally process more gradually than traditional thioglycolate-based systems. Korean techniques may also use different shield systems and application methods to give the artist greater control over the final shape. The aim isn't simply to create the strongest curl possible.
It's to create a lift that works with the client's natural lashes and desired result.

This is where it gets interesting. People often assume: Korean = cysteamineTraditional = TGA It isn't quite that simple.
The technique determines how we position and shape the lashes. The chemistry determines how we temporarily alter the bonds inside the lash to allow that shape to be created.
Cysteamine can be used outside Korean techniques, and not every treatment marketed as “Korean” is necessarily identical.
So when you're choosing a lash lift, don't focus only on the name of the treatment.
The artist's understanding of lash condition, chemistry, processing time and technique matters enormously.
Is a Korean lash lift gentler?
This is one of the biggest reasons Korean lash lifts have become so popular. Cysteamine-based systems are generally considered a gentler alternative to traditional thioglycolate-based formulas and tend to process more gradually. But there's an important point here:
Gentler does not mean damage-proof.
Any lash lift chemically changes the structure of the hair. A cysteamine-based product can still overprocess lashes if it is used incorrectly or left on for too long. This is why I believe the health and condition of the natural lashes should always be assessed before deciding how to perform the treatment.
Do Korean and traditional lash lifts look different?
They can. A traditional lash lift can create anything from a natural curve to a stronger, more defined curl.
A Korean-style technique often focuses on creating lift from the root, clean lash direction and a smooth, controlled shape.
But I wouldn't choose a technique simply because one result is trending on Instagram. Two clients can bring me exactly the same inspiration photo and still require completely different treatment decisions. Natural lash length, thickness, direction and eye anatomy all affect the final result.
Which lash lift should you choose?
You don't necessarily need to decide this yourself. This is something I prefer to assess during consultation. I look at:
the condition and strength of your natural lashes;
their length, thickness and growth direction;
your previous lash lift history;
your eye shape and eyelid anatomy;
and the result you actually want to achieve.
From there, the technique, shield, processing and final shape can be adapted to you.
That's far more important than simply booking whichever treatment is currently trending.
How long does a Korean lash lift last?
Both Korean and traditional lash lifts gradually grow out with your natural lash cycle. You'll often see results discussed in the region of six to eight weeks, but there isn't one guaranteed duration for every client. Lash growth, natural lash characteristics, technique and aftercare can all influence how long the result remains visible. This is another reason I prefer to avoid promising an exact number of weeks. Your lashes aren't identical to anyone else's.
Is Korean lash lift better than traditional lash lift?
Not necessarily.
And this is probably the most important part of this article. I don't believe we should label one professional technique as universally “good” and another as “bad”. A well-performed traditional lash lift can give a beautiful result. A well-performed Korean lash lift can also give a beautiful result.
What matters is choosing the right approach for the lashes in front of us. For me, modern lash treatments should be less about following one technique and more about understanding the natural lashes, the chemistry being used and the result we're trying to create.
