LED/UV Lash Extensions: What Are They and Are They Better Than Traditional Lash Extensions?
LED/UV lash extensions sound very high-tech. A special lamp. Light-cured adhesive. Instant curing. But does that actually mean better lash extensions?
I've been working with an LED/UV lash system for around two years, alongside traditional lash adhesive. And my answer is: sometimes yes — but not for the reasons you might think. Let's keep it simple.
What are LED/UV lash extensions?
The actual lash extensions aren't different. We can still create Classic, Light Volume or Hybrid lashes. The difference is in how the adhesive is cured during application.
With an LED/UV lash system, I use a compatible adhesive together with a specialised light. Once the extension is positioned correctly, the adhesive is cured using the light. This gives the lash artist much more control over when the bond sets. So no, your lashes don't suddenly become UV lashes. They're still lash extensions. We have just changed part of the application technology.
Do LED/UV lash extensions last longer?
This is one of the biggest claims around LED lash extensions. From my own experience, I find the retention very reliable.
However, if I compare my current LED/UV sets with my traditional lash extensions, I wouldn't tell a client that LED automatically lasts longer. With good application, appropriate aftercare and suitable products, both systems can give excellent retention. And that's important. New technology doesn't automatically make everything that came before it bad. Sometimes traditional glue does the job perfectly well.
Why do I love LED/UV for sensitive clients?
This is where LED/UV technology has made the biggest difference in my studio.
Some clients find traditional adhesive fumes uncomfortable. Their eyes may feel particularly dry or sensitive during or after their appointment.
For some of these clients, I've found LED/UV lash extensions considerably more comfortable.
I even have clients who previously believed they were allergic to traditional lash extensions but have been able to wear my LED/UV system without the same problems.
However, there is a very important BUT here.
LED/UV lash glue is NOT allergy-free.
Sensitivity, irritation and a genuine allergic reaction are not necessarily the same thing.
If you've experienced swelling, redness or another reaction after previous lash extensions, don't assume that changing to LED automatically makes the treatment safe for you. This is exactly why I prefer to discuss previous reactions during a consultation before deciding what we should try next.
Can I get my lashes wet after LED/UV extensions?
One of my favourite practical advantages is immediate curing. With the LED/UV system I use, the adhesive is light-cured during the application. That means my clients don't need to plan their entire day around their lashes afterwards. Gym? Fine. Sweating? Fine. Getting them wet? Fine. You don't have to spend the rest of the day walking around London terrified of rain. For busy clients, that's genuinely useful.
Can LED/UV be used for Classic, Hybrid and Volume lashes?
Yes — choosing LED/UV doesn't mean choosing one particular lash look. At Lash Zone London, I use the system for Classic, Light Volume and Hybrid lash extensions.
Your design is still selected according to your natural lashes, eye features and desired result.
There is one technique I personally don't recommend with the LED/UV adhesive system I currently use: Mega Volume.
My LED adhesive has a thicker consistency. When combined with a large fan containing many extensions, it can create a bulkier, harder attachment point at the base. For me, that defeats the purpose. I want the attachment to remain clean, controlled and comfortable rather than creating a heavy, plasticky-feeling base.
So for LED/UV, I prefer controlled techniques such as Classic, Light Volume and Hybrid.
More lashes aren't automatically better lashes.
Why are LED/UV lash extensions more expensive?
An LED/UV system isn't simply a different bottle of lash glue.
It requires specialist equipment, compatible materials, additional protective measures, training and careful working protocols.
The technician also needs to learn how to work accurately with the light and adhesive together. All of that increases the cost of providing the treatment properly. So if you notice that LED lash extensions in London cost slightly more than a traditional set, there is usually more happening behind the scenes than a fancy lamp.
So, are LED/UV lash extensions better?
For everyone? No.
If traditional lash extensions work beautifully for you, there may be absolutely no reason to change.
But for someone who finds conventional adhesive fumes uncomfortable, wants the convenience of immediate curing, or simply prefers this application system, UV lash extensions can be a fantastic option.
That's why I offer both.
